Learning Manners with Manners Monkey and Miss Joni

Politeness and manners go hand in hand, and, when a child has good manners they are more likely to be polite! Be that person who shines through and through because using good manners is the right thing to do! Thank you.

Hi, I'm Manners Monkey, just one of the nine Characters of Character. Having good Manners is my thing!

Manners are important because they help children learn the value of respect, kindness, and consideration in everyday life. Teaching good manners through a fun and relatable character like Manners Monkey makes the lesson easier for children to understand and apply. Here’s why Manners Monkey is such a valuable teaching tool:

  • Relatable Role Model: Children connect with Manners Monkey as a friendly example who shows how to say “please,” “thank you,” and “excuse me” in different situations.

  • Encourages Respect: By following Manners Monkey’s example, kids learn to respect others’ feelings, space, and belongings.

  • Builds Positive Relationships: Good manners help children make friends and get along better with others—skills that are essential both in and out of school.

  • Promotes Kind Communication: Manners Monkey teaches children how to speak politely and listen carefully, helping them become thoughtful communicators.

  • Creates a Caring Environment: When children use good manners, classrooms and homes become happier, more cooperative places for everyone.

When I held classes at the library, I read a social story and had a discussion with the students about manners. We talked about polite words, what action we could use to show politeness, like raising our hand or holding open the door. When I got home I had already received an email from a parent who had thanked us for coming out that evening to talk about good manners and introduce Manners Monkey to the children. Her daughter wanted to learn more on the drive home about good manners and what some polite words were in their native language. What a conversation starter and way to learn more communication skills!
