Characters of Character Joni Downey

Providing a firm foundation for children to develop strong civic values.

Characters of Character is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing tools and resources to educators and parents to help teach children nine positive character traits. The traits that Characters of Character focuses on are behavior, perseverance, friendship, healthy habits, manners, respect, responsibility, self-esteem, and kindness.

We believe that introducing these traits at a younger age will create a better-quality society for everyone. Our organization has developed a unique way to reach children and help them internalize the nine traits that we focus on. Our Characters allow children to identify with the traits correlating with each Character.

At Characters of Character we have taken the time to institute a full circle of learning! Our character traits are designed to follow a child from school, home, and into their adult life. The Characters are relatable to a child, making it easier for the child to internalize their positive meaning. Our organization is designed to build good character through our Characters and their respective traits while enhancing a child’s ability to read, write, make good decisions, develop fine motor skills, and to build and improve social and emotional skills; we call these 5 personal abilities our “Five Platforms.”

Why Characters of Character NFP, Inc. makes a positive impact…..

  • Relatable: These characters are relatable, children accept our Characters visually just as they would their favorite cartoon characters.

  • Understanding: These characters are easy for children to relate to and a child relates to the Characters’ actions through stories, art activities, discussions and teachings.

  • Comprehension: Children make the connection between the Characters and the traits they represent, comprehending the lessons.

  • Internalizes: Children begin to enhance their own character traits and make better choices once the correlation between Character and trait is established. Becoming role models.

  • Reinforce: These Characters surround a child with positive reinforcements, encouraging them to continuously make good choices at home, in school, and in the community.

One day, Characters of Character would like to have a space to welcome in other organizations, schools, groups, families and classrooms to engage them in character building lessons and activities, building a better tomorrow for the community. When a child relates to the Character traits, they begin to model them, that certainly builds a good leader!
