Beat Boredom and Teach Character to Kids!

Quote by Benjamin Franklin

Well, as the summer is well underway, something to consider is how we teach our children that their character is important and it matters today, tomorrow and in everything that they are learning. I think the summer time is a great time to reflect on some tips and ideas to make learning fun and build character in our kids.

Here are fun, engaging activities you can do with your kids that not only beat boredom but also help build strong character traits like kindness, responsibility, respect, and perseverance. And, if you are familiar with Characters of Character you know that we have characters for all of this!

Activities That Help With Boredom and Build Character:

  • Kindness Jar Challenge…

  • This can be done all year long actually, keep adding more to the jar, after all, kindness and gratitude are a daily activity to be enjoyed.

  • Create a jar filled with kind acts (“Do your chores without being told” “Bake extra cookies for your neighbor,” “Make a Thinking of You card for a friend or family member,” “Clean up without being asked”).

  • Let your kids draw a card daily or weekly to embed the importance of kindness and this will become a habit of theirs to be kind, share kindness and encourage others to do the same.

2. Do you have a garden?

  • If it’s flowers that you grow, let your kids pick them, make arrangements and give them to family or friends, or even bring them to a local Senior Center to enjoy!

  • If it’s vegetables that you grow, do the same! Share them, let your kids create meals or snacks or help you in the kitchen if you preserve them. Let them get their hands dirty!

3. Character Story Time

  • Read books or watch short films with lessons. We have a YouTube Chanel and we have a lot of books!

  • With a Composition notebook let your children write stories, practice letter writing, make the grocery list and the “Honey Do” list!

4. Responsibility Chart

  • Have a conversation about being responsible and together make a chart, what does your child need to accomplish during the day? Chores, homework, reading, etc.

  • Celebrate their accomplishments with praise or small rewards. I always keep the charts at eye level as a visual reminder for them. We have Certificates of Achievement!

Include kids in daily tasks (like cooking, gardening, or budgeting) and turn those into teachable moments about being responsible, being respectful, having healthy habits, persistence, friendships, kindness, confidence, manners and good behavior, just like the Characters of Character!

Your support allows us to continue to make a difference in the life of a child. Miss Joni and Team Characters
