“There is Nothing Spooky about Good Character”

Halloween is a time of costumes, candy, and creativity — but it’s also the perfect season to remind children that there’s nothing spooky about having good character. While ghosts, goblins, and skeletons may fill the streets, having good character never goes out of style.

These are a few ways to use Halloween fun to encourage strong character in children:

1. Friendship Frog says to “Include Everyone”
Not every child can go trick-or-treating. Think about ways to include friends or classmates — maybe by sharing extra candy, inviting them to a pumpkin carving, or bringing the fun to them.

2. Behavior Bear says “Don’t Run or Push Others”

It’s always fun to dress and go Trick or Trunk or Treating, but you still need to behave by not running or pushing in front of others who are also out to have fun!

3. Warm-Hearted Walrus says “Share the Treats”
It’s tempting to keep all the candy for yourself, but encouraging kids to share with siblings, friends, or even donate some to a local charity teaches generosity and kindness!

4. Manners Monkey says to “Respect Every Door”
Not every neighbor will have candy, and that’s okay. Remind children to use kind words, say “thank you,” and respect those who may choose not to participate.

5. Respectful Rabbit says to “Choose Friendly Costumes”
Halloween is about imagination. Encourage children to pick costumes that reflect fun, creativity, or positive heroes rather than ones that might scare or put others down.

6. Responsible Rabbit says to “Show Responsibility on the Streets”
From staying with their group, checking in with an adult to safely crossing the road, responsibility plays a big role in a fun and safe Halloween night.

Because when it comes to good character, there’s nothing spooky about it.

Did you know that when Miss Joni piloted the characters in an elementary school she earned a National Promising Practice Award? Plus, a student named Megan dressed in costume of Do’er Duck that her mom and she made because this was her favorite character!
