Schools Out For Summer
Summers can be full of fun, but then again, not for everyone? How do you keep your children engaged and on task so when the new school year comes they are well prepared to soar in their new grade? Growth is important and you want your children to be successful in their academics, in making good choices and finding their way on their journey . Reading is a great place to start! Books take kids where they’ve never been, where they’d love to go and teaches them what they want to learn. The trick is…..
Finding subjects that interest your children! It’s that simple in my opinion. I spent five years on the Reading Team at school and for the students who had difficulties in reading, we found subjects, places and topics that the student found to be interesting and that they wanted to learn more about. So, this summer I’d like to share a few tips to engage your children in the love of reading….
Have plenty of reading materials readily available this summer! Ask your children ahead of time what they would like to learn about, read about and perhaps include their friends so that they can go on adventures together!
Have plenty of activity books around, too. Maybe word searches, audio books, engaging books to increase their curiosity and learn to love reading!
Allow them to bring their books with them, go outdoors, lay on a blanket, go on a picnic and to the park. This way it does not feel like a ‘chore’ to read but shows them that it can be fun!
Have a bag ready for travel filled with books, paper, crayons and pencils for your child to be creative and draw, write and put it on paper!
Why not let them make their own Journal? Let them create a cover from construction paper or two pieces of copy paper, then staple copy paper or lined paper together to make their own Journal. When a child feels they have ownership they will take better care and interest in things.
Do you read? Be a role model and allow your children to see you reading or writing letters to family and friends. What you do they want to do, too!
Encouragement goes a long way! How many books did you read this week? Make a chart and be sure there is an incentive to read, write and learn during the summer.
All nine of the Characters of Character have books to engage, impact and empower your children! If you’re struggling with behavior, perseverance, friendship, healthy habits, manners, respect, being responsible, kindness or self-esteem, we got you covered!
Some of the character have a Journal, or an activity book, these are on their page, too. Plus, they all have composition notebooks which are FUN for kids to take ownership and use. Make learning fun and it’s not the kids are learning, they are growing!
