Respecting Earth Day

When you are teaching a child about Earth Day, it’s important that they understand what it means to be respectful. First, respecting oneself is most important and then we understand the importance of respecting others and the world we live in. Our character Respectful Rabbit has a few ideas to help teach your children about being respectful and looks forward to a respectful Earth Day from our children and youth. A classroom learned about Respectful Rabbit at an early age and they simply colored the character from our Resource Book. Use for display or as a cover for a journal. Talk about what respect means, what it looks like, what it sounds like, how conversations are built form being respectful, how friendships are formed from being respectful, what does respect look like, what does being respected feel like, these are things we can teach our children and youth. At some point if they seem confused, I’ve done this many times, is to reverse role play. Ask the child who is being disrespected how they would feel if they were being treated the way they are treating others. Sometimes we need to put that person in a different situation so that they can better understand. It’s not being hurtful, it’s making a difference and showing them how to be respectful to others so that they are then being respected, too.

  • Understand that the earth will be here long after we will and how important it is to take care of it. How does one take care of the earth?

    1. Throw your trash in the garbage, never on the ground or floor

    2. Recycle, Reuse and Repurpose when you can. Take a food can, clean it, paint it and put a plant in it to give to a loved one. Save the tabs from soda cans and donate to a school or organization who collects them.

    3. Walk or ride a bike when you can instead of driving in the car.

    4. Plant trees, this is what google shares: Benefits of Native Plantings

Native plants are resilient and well-adapted to the local environment. They thrive in the company of other local plants and wildlife. They promote local biodiversity and ensure that the natural environment is resilient and healthy. They exist naturally with minimal care.

    5. Conserve energy

Respectful Rabbit has activities and ideas to help teach children to be respectful. When this foundation is is in place, a child will enternalize and surely begin being respectful to oneself, to others and to the world around them.
