You just never know:How Your Character ShinesAs a nonprofit organization, one never knows just how much impact you make. We are not in a specific location just yet, we share our characters and their important messages best we can. This past August Self-Esteem Elephant made a visit in Tennessee as Ms. Joni and her daughter Jennifer purchased a booth at the Hendersonville Handmade Market. This is where we able to share our project for the Sumner Library in Hendersonville to bring our Confidence Building Boxes to the Library. We are looking for Sponsors and Donations to get them into the community.
We passed out information and had put a sticker on water bottles that simply said: "I Like ME" shared with coloring pages for children to engage in as well. People were very kind and friendly and we were able to share our organization with the community. (We would love to meet your community, too) When we returned home, I had a nice email from a mom who walked through the Market and met us and shared a water-bottle with her daughter. This is what it said:
"Hello! My daughter and o stopped by your booth Sunday. She loved the water bottle with the “I like me” sticker on and refilled it and took it to school today. Such a great message for kids (and everyone)
I also wanted to because I am a yoga instructor and teach a kids yoga class other month at a studio in Hendersonville. I would love to incorporate your message. Would it be possible to get a pdf of the rainbow “I am” to pass out at my classes and maybe the stickers?"
I sent her a care package to share with her Girl Scouts and daughter, she was very appreciative and we were very touched that she took the time to let us know the impact on the water bottle!
While we have relocated to Tennessee, and still donating nationally, I've been bust reaching out for Sponsorship and Donations for our Superhero Activity Boxes which we donate to Children's Hospitals. Also looking for Sponsorships and Donations for our Building Confidence Boxes for the Hendersonville Library. While writing grants and seeking such sponsors, it helps tremendously to have actual evidence that what you are doing is a need and appreciated. Therefore, I reached out to this parent, which represents many parents out there for a letter of support which I could incorporate into my application. This is what she wrote:
To Whom it may concern,
My daughter and I met Joni at a local market in august. She offered a water bottle to my daughter and some coloring pages. The bottle said “I like me” and this sparked a great conversation with my daughter about how we can like others but it’s also Important to like ourselves. When we got home we worked on the coloring page which was a rainbow and had positive affirmations on it. We spoke to how my daughter was each of the characteristics and is hanging in her room as a reminder.
We have lived in Hendersonville for 8 years and have not come across a program that offers this type of encouragement and education for children. My daughter is also part of a local Girl Scout troop and I believe the would all benefit from Characters or Character program. I also have 3 year twins and would love for them to have access to this program as well. Self love, self esteem, manners and all the other characters in the program are amazing ways to enrich the education our students already have available.
