On Gratitude Day #9, I'm grateful for who I Am and who I Am becoming. I've been on a personal growth journey for a few years now. It all started when I took my first Great Adventure after turning the big 60! I'd been married for 40 years and we raised three amazing adults. My good friend Tina asked me one day, "would you like to go on an adventure" and without hesitation, I said, "Yes"! Well, we loaded up her Smart Car and drove to an art retreat in Louisiana at MoJoy Studios. It was a group of beautifully gifted and spiritual women who gathered to engage in art and conversation. the instructor, Melanie, turned to me and just asked, "Joni, what brings you here"? My response even surprised myself! I said, "I'm looking for Joni again" Hence, my great adventure began! I am grateful and becoming more and more confident in who I am each and every day. So, today, I am grateful for me.
Raising Confident Children
Raising children is not an easy choice, and from the bottom of my heart, I would have liked a dozen! Blessed with three. Kids just bring me so much happiness and unconditional love and acceptance. Characters of Character as you know is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide a firm foundation for children to establish strong civic values. One of the characters is Self-Esteem Elephant. The message is simple, "I Like ME" and when a child can accept who they are, they are more likely to become more social, more advanced academically as they accept who they are and if they don't know something, they are confident that they can learn it. I've done many group paintings with children on Self-Esteem, one of which was at an elementary school. After meeting with the Social Worker, she thought that the characters might be 'to cute' for the 4th graders to engage in. Regardless, the 4th grade class joined in on our group. And, the honest truth is that they were the most engaged in the conversation! When I asked the group to raise their hands with their answer, the question was, "What do you like about you"? Their first instinct is something they like about what they do at school came to mind. Hmmm....I'm not very good at math, or reading, etc. and nobody raised their hand. Then, I asked, "what is something that you are good at, and it does not have to be at school" and one by one their hands were raised. I'm good at skateboarding, I'm good at painting, I'm good at helping, and so on. As we all sat and listened to their answers, their peers were also engaged in learning about their class mates and what they liked to do and what they were good at. This was an eye opener and a lot of new friendships were made.
Our I AM Confidence Building Affirmation Coloring Book is filled with beautiful pages for your children to color, for you to engage in a conversation about the page and allow your child to grow!
Tips to Teach Confidence
1. From anyone of the pages in the book, let your child color the page. Use it as a Journal cover and have your child write in it. For example, if the page is I AM BRAVE.
Ask your child what it means to be brave? What do they do that makes them brave? When were they brave?
2. Use the same page (take a copy if you must) and use as a sticker chart
3. Use as a visual reminder
4. Encourage them to color, write and use their imagination and their put their thoughts down to help build awareness and to become grateful for who they are, what they do and how they help others.
So, back to being grateful during the month of November, I encourage you to write down one thing every day that you are grateful for. This will refresh your memory, this will give you a positive mindset, this will build healthy habits and remind you that there is so much to be grateful for.
P.S. I sincerely hope that you take time to write down at least one thing that you are grateful for each day this month, and, that you notice the impact it has on your mindset. Stay tuned for future posts as I will share some ways to involve your children in these simple tasks, too!
