Characters of Character is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization located in McHenry, Illinois, however, we share our resources nationally. We are trying to do our part in this pandemic by offering FREE RESOURCES for families and children to engage in character building activities. Check out our Character Corner and be sure to share your pictures and puppets with us, too!
We are also continuing our 2020 Projects to donate our Superhero Activity Boxes to children in the hospitals. During this difficult time, life still goes on and to be able to bring joy to girls and boys through this and otherwise, is a heartwarming experience. Would you like to support our project? Learn more here and please share us with others. Corporations and Businesses are welcome to sponsor these activity boxes, simply contact Joni Together we will make the world better.
Last year we brought our character Self-Esteem Elephant to Shriner's in Chicago and shared self-esteem building activities and the message of "I Like ME" with the families and children. We also brought our character Warm-Hearted Walrus to Huntley Hospital to donate our Kindness Activities to the children. We've donated our resources to Ann and Robert Lurie's Hospital and Loyola. What Characters of Character found was a need for resources like this for the children to engage in and the appreciation of them was such a pleasant experience, too! Your donation helps us to continue to donate to these hospitals and others. Please consider the joy they bring to the children, families and the staff. You can donate for one or as many as you would like. Our orders must be 500 in order to lower the cost to $20.00 per box. So doable!
Each Superhero Activity Box is filled with wonderful activities for the children to work on while they are healing in the hospital. They will be engaged and internalize the meaning of these characters through art and literacy. A Superhero Activity Book is included, plus an easel to display their I AM SUPER canvas they paint with the watercolors provided. A character lanyard (agent badge) is included, crayons, superhero mask, superhero stickers, paintbrush, black and white poster to color or paint, a full color Super Hero Poster and a handwritten letter from one of the Characters of Character. Pretty packed with spectacular activities, don't you think?!
THE BOX IS SO INVITING, COLORFUL, STURDY AND FUN!
If you have any questions, please contact me and together we will make the world better!
The Characters truly love getting mail from you, write us a letter or draw a picture or two. Simply provide a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope and they will write back. We can be Pen Pals, its' as simple as that! Who is your favorite character?
Why Teaching Healthy Habits Is Vital For Kids
Times have changed, but having healthy habits should remain the same, it’s just heightened for now. Research has found that a healthy habit is formed when you do something for at least 21 days. As adults, we teach our children to wash their hands often, after they go to the washroom, after they play outdoors, when they sneeze, make a mess and before meals and snacks. Today, we just need to remind them more often, hopefully it’s already a habit.
Healthy Hippo is sharing coloring pages for families to do with their children (scroll down to download). Positive reinforcement is always welcomed in any situation; use these as coloring pages for your children to write and draw in. Ask them first, “What are healthy habits?” to open the line of communications with them. Ask them, “Who do you know that has healthy habits,” to let them think about things. Allow them to write in their journal and draw pictures to communicate their thoughts and feelings. Ask them, “What is your favorite food?” Is it a healthy choice? If not, discuss healthier choices that they can be making.
Below are some simple ideas to help teach healthy habits:
1. Be a role model
2. Wash your hands often
3. Choose nutritional foods
4. Choose healthy snacks
5. Brush your teeth
7. Keep your mind healthy, read
8. Do puzzles
9. Have conversations, communicate, keep your mind active
10. A healthy body is as important as a healthy mind
Teaching our children these vital core values shapes them into their own character and helps them to gain a deeper awareness to develop these positive character traits. I’m a visual learner and guess many of you are as well. Use old magazines to cut pictures out and let your kids glue them onto another piece of paper, then use as a poster and visual reminder! Here are some ideas on what to look for in the magazine:
– Find healthy foods
– Find hygiene products
– Find people exercising
– Find items for building a healthy body
– Find items for building a healthy mind
Discuss with your family and let them know what you expect from them in order to form healthy habits. It’s not an easy task to always eat healthily, and I find myself struggling at times with this. What I’ve done for myself is to limit the cravings. When I really want a piece of chocolate cake, I eat just a few bites rather than an entire piece. It’s the little things that will make a difference and become healthier habits in your life.
Characters of Character is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. Your support helps us continue our mission to provide a firm foundation for children to establish strong civic values. During this stay at home time, it makes you appreciate what you have and makes me think of how I can help others. Such gratitude to all of our medical staff, first responders, grocery workers and others who are out there doing all they can to make it better for you and I. With an immunity disorder, I'm not leaving our home, still my heart yearns to do something to help. We've been making videos for families to color along with one of our characters. Soon we're making more with additional activities to do with your children. We hope they help with a positive message and lessons on character building. Here's the thing, through all of this, life still happens, there are children who are spending time in the hospital. There family make not be able to visit them, they may be lonely, they may need so positive uplifting to bring them some happiness. That's where you come in. A $20.00 donation, will fill one of the activity boxes and they are filled with a lot of activities and a lot of love for each child. Please consider a donation for this. Please share with others. Please let your employer know of a Sponsorship opportunity to support our 2020 Vision. Thank you. It's not easy out there these days, and so many struggle, my heart goes to the children.
By now I hope that you're familiar with our characters and the impact they have on our children and how they give us a nudge and reminder to be of good character. Children are listening to what we say, watching what we do and most likely they want to be just like you. Be a role model. Please share us to help bring awareness of our mission, our projects and our resources developed to make a difference in the life of a child. Sponsorship opportunities are also available for this project, please contact me. What a great project to put your name on! Thank you.
