A simple introduction of what using polite words means, or what it means to be polite and to use polite words is important. Introduce your child to Manners Monkey through this short story and have a conversation with them about what good manners means. What good manners sound like and what good manners looks like. When you explain this to your child they're more able to understand and internalize this vital core value.

Teaching a child to have good manners is a daily task, teaching them to use polite words whenever they ask is important. When you are a role model you're child is picking up the language you use and the actions you use, please be aware! Every child learns at their own pace, how about making a paper bag puppet to put a smile on their face!

Let's Have Manners starring Manners Monkey is available on Amazon. This is a short social story to help introduce the trait of good manners to your child. Children relate to fun characters and will internalize this trait the more you reference them. Manners Monkey suggests referencing this character often and soon your child will embrace the value and want to be like Manners Monkey.

A fun activity would be to make a Manners Monkey headband with your child! Make one for yourself, too and write polite words on the headband itself. Read these words with your child and explain what they mean. Then, write them on their headband and every time they use polite words give them a sticker or perform a polite action, again, give them another sticker. They will soon become just like Manners Monkey!

We hope you talk with your child about good manners. Below are some simple ideas to teach them:
1. To be a role model
2. To use polite words at home
3. To use polite words in conversations
4. To use polite words when you are talking on your phone
5. To be polite wherever you are in your language and your actions

Something as adults we sometimes seem to forget is the fact that our children are listening to what we say, they are watching what we do and they want to be like us when they get older. It's so important to be a role model for your child for you are the one they look up to first.

Encourage your child to write a letter to any of the Characters of Character. With a S.A.S.E. the character will write back and they will become Pen Pals!
